The Dry River

What is with the modern focus on children? I guess I just don’t see these kids as prodigies. A recent news story (the kid who doesn’t pledge) let the father speak. He said his child was a person, with equal rights (on a side note, the kid was taking about equal rights) and deserved as much recognition as any adult. Really, does he? I don’t think so. 18 is the legal age of adulthood, 16 is the legal age to drive, 21 is the legal age to own a gun. Does this kid “deserve” rights? Have we not realized that children are ignorant (ignorant means not able, willing, or learned… not stupid), is that not why we have these age limits set? I just don’t see the big deal about some kid that had a nation’s epiphany. Example, the kid in the story mentioned above was arguing for gay rights (a noble, but futile cause) and was only able to articulate marriage as an area of unequal rights. Needless to say, when you mention gay rights, marriage is a big topic, but not the only one. The child was obviously intelligent, but not even close to realizing his statements. I don’t personally care if he was wrong or right, he was incoherent.

The news has recently focused on these children with a cause, my question is why. Do people just think these kids are cute? A reasonable explanation for the media’s misuse of the story. Or do people actually care? If they do care, why? Do they realize the child is under 12 and doesn’t realize the political valiance of the statement? Do they think that this is some sort of religious awakening that needs attention? I just don’t see the use of the claims that these children are some sort of Jesus figure that deserves our respect. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is the fact that they have yet to be corrupted by society, and therefore have unbiased belief. Unfortunately the later, I feel, is impossible.
